The birthday card I got from my parents features Pixar's Cars characters driving around. It was originally for 5 year olds, until my mom wrote a 2 in front of the 5 in red marker. My parents, they know me so well!

I've put together a playlist folks might find interesting. Right now, it sits on iTunes with the name OddNJewish, but it's basically just an eclectic sampler of Jewish music.

My playlist goes from Osvaldo Golijov to Leonard Cohen, from John Zorn to Yossi Piamenta, from Ani V'ata to Idan Raichel, from Salamone de Rossi to Frank London. And if many of those names don't mean anything to you, they mean a lot to me. These are musicians who aren't just Jewish, they're musicians whose music tells Jewish stories.

These songs come from Ashkenazi music traditions as well as from Sephardi traditions. They take influence in the sounds of Romania, of Italy, of Spain, of Morocco, of Argentina, of Israel, of Cuba, of Ethiopia, of Poland, of America. They learned tricks from jazz and folk rock and techno and reggae and psych-rock and pop and avant-garde classical and madrigal singing. They defy any definition of Jewish music more rigorous than the one I provide above. There are calls to faith and expressions of doubt. There are joyous odes and mournful dirges. This is my Judaism.

Happy Birthday!
