Oh, two things I am also nominating for Hugos...

Space Sweepers for Best Dramatic Presentation Long Form, which I didn't mention in my last post for obvious reasons but which I thought was an amazing SFF movie.

Rephrase? by CenozoicSynapsid, which I think I am nominating for Best Short Story? I'm not sure how to check the wordcount, let's make that the Hugo Administrator's job. But no writing I read this year more filled me with that sense of "Yes, this is how science fiction can speak to the moment in a way no other literature can."

Things I am planning to nominate for a Hugo at the moment

"Mirror Workout" from Saturday Night Live for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. It's a sketch in which a couple of bro-y guys do a peloton-style workout video that the audience slowly realizes is actually being broadcast from a demonic prison. But the bro-y guys don't realize, they seem to just think it's weird video shtick! It does so much with so little, honestly it's the piece of new media from this past year I've gone back to the most. I know the Hugo voters and think it's unlikely anyone else will think it worthy, but it's a haunting fantasy tale that is also hilarious, and it packs it a surprising depth

The Unraveling by Benjamin Rosenbaum for Best Novel. Incredible story of love and coming of age in a time of Far Future revolution. I didn't read a lot of new novels this year, but this one was highly anticipated and completely delivered.

"Gitl Schneiderman Learns to Live With Her In-Laws" by Rebecca Fraimow for Best Short Story. Third story in an amazing cycle of shtetl fantasies. How is it both so funny and such a punch in the feels?

Hugo nominations just opened. If you were a member of ConZealand or if you are a member of Discon 3, you can nominate for the Hugos.

I have not read that much new stuff this year. I think my only nominations are likely to be short stories. My two favorite short stories that came out in 2020 were:

How to Build a Unicorn by AJ Fitzwater

and

"Storm Story" by Llinos Cathryn Thomas in the anthology Consolation Songs

The best new short story I read this year was actually Sheree Renee Thomas's "Nightflight" in her 2020 anthology Nine Bar Blues, but my detective work says that even though most of the anthology is new fiction, that particular story seems to be a reprint from a couple years ago. In any case, I also highly commend you to it and the whole anthology even though "Nightflight" is not Hugo eligible, it's an amazing take on Asimov's "Nightfall" inspired by recent history in the South.

Because of the year overlap, the following episodes of The Good Place seem to be eligible for the 2020 Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation: Short Form

S3

"The Book of Dougs"
"Chidi Sees the Time-Knife"
"Pandemonium"

S4

"A Girl from Arizona"
"A Girl from Arizona" (Part 2)
"Chillaxing"
"Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy"
"Employee of the Bearimy"
"A Chip Driver Mystery"
"Help Is Other People"
"The Funeral to End All Funerals"
"The Answer"

There's a lot of great storytelling in there, but I think my favorites are "Chidi Sees the Time Knife" and "The Answer".

I have only one opinion about the Hugo nominations that I feel really strongly about:

Throwing Sheyd, Better Living Through Jewish Demonology, should be nominated for Best Fancast
