Operas I have bought tickets for this season:
Don Giovanni at the Met
-New production. Looking forward to it. Honestly not sure why I'm looking forward to it, other than it being one of Mozart's masterpieces and I always like fresh takes on it. I don't know anything in particular that recommends this production.
The Enchanted Island at the Met
-New production. Really looking forward to it. Cast of great Baroque singers, doing ridiculous Baroque pastiche in what look to be gorgeous costumes on a gorgeous set. Plus it'll be my first opportunity to see Domingo sing. But OMG the rest of the cast: Danielle DiNiese, Joyce DiDonato, David Daniels... And William Christie conducts. Should be a glorious evening.
Billy Budd at the Met
-Repertory, but I haven't seen it. Should be fun, I hope. It'll be my first time seeing Britten at the Met. Not entirely sure it'll work right on so big a stage.
Vec Makropulos at the Met
-Repertory, but I haven't seen it. Karita Mattila singing Emila, who I believe
starlady raved about seeing in the role in San Francisco. I've always had a soft spot for this opera, ever since Czech Beer and Opera night. European Modernist Science Fiction opera ftw!
Dark Sisters at Gotham Chamber Opera
-First Nico Muhly opera to make it to New York. Sounds like it's my kind of opera, modern and transgressive and politically engaged.
I have yet to buy tickets, but I'm also planning to see Rufus's Prima Donna at NYCO in the spring. And possibly the Traviata, too. I'm steering clear of NYCO's Cosi after a bad experience with Christopher Alden's NYCO Don Giovanni.
