some books

About the same level of eh as reading any Dresden Files book, with the added fun of it really clearly only being part one of a long book that continued two months later when Battle Ground was published. I hate when publishers do that, and my local library does not have Battle Ground so I'll have to wait for an intra-country transfer.
The Futurological Congress by Stanislaw Lem
I described this to someone at Fanworks as being "H.G. Wells as written by William S. Burroughs." It's a thorough mind-trip of a novel, and very late '60s in feel, but the satire of it sometimes landed well and sometimes felt like gilding the lily- the original premise, before it shifts a few times, is that they hold a convention of futurologists in the middle of a civil war and the futurologists are so hung up on their little academic fiefdoms that they don't notice that the whole world is changing underneath their feet. But then the whole world changes a few times and it becomes harder and harder to keep up with.
The Boy is Back by Meg Cabot
Of all things, a romance novel themed around elder abuse. Not my favorite topic for romance.
