I made this vid in about six or eight hours the Saturday and Sunday before Festivids were due, it's absurd.
lizardjay's prompts for Space Sweepers were 1) I'd like to see a vid about Bubs and 2) I'd like to see a vid about the fucked up society in the movie set to angry music. For perhaps obvious reasons the first thing that occurred to me was that Against Me! would work great for both! I was torn between doing a Captain Jang vid to "Thrash Unreal" and doing a Bubs vid to "True Trans Soul Rebel" or "Transgender Dysphoria Blues", but then I found the version of "True Trans Soul Rebel" where Miley Cyrus sings backup vocals and I was sold.
I think the confusing but awesome thing about Bubs is that she is a whole pile of transphobic stereotypes, but she's the hero because of them, not in spite of them. She scams her friends to pay for gender confirming surgery, she has a misleading and dangerous strength when she looks femme, she does not think 'like a woman'. It ought to be offensive! But every time she goes back to one of these wells, she looks like a badass doing it. The card scene where she steals her crewmates' money is hilarious, in part because they are all trying to scam each other and in part because she just doesn't give a damn what they think about what she's doing. And she has so much heart and so much humanity that you want her to succeed, even if you also would like her to discover a moral center.
I really likedcolls's observation on Discord response to this vid that Space Sweepers is not a film about a crew becoming a found family, it's a film about an already constituted found family becoming part of a larger found community. "Home" is an idea I keep echoing in the film, that Bubs perhaps already has a home, but as she becomes more herself, her home evolves with her and becomes in some sense more hers.
