Notes on the GRSigmaSigmaK finale.

Awww. I'm gonna miss that show. Even when it made me angry at the stupid things it was asking me to believe, I enjoyed it a great deal. They were good at filling most episodes both with things I hated and things I loved.

The best part of the finale, of course, was the break-in. That was classic Kappa Tau hijinks, and I love that they brought in Zetas to help out. The Ashleigh/Rebecca swap was ludicrously perfect. And all of the Zetas were like, so thrilled to be in on a Kappa Tau prank, which I thought was hilarious and eminently plausible. GRSigmaSigmaK, I've said a thousand times, is much better when it's about hijinks instead of relationship drama.

The accidentally graduated thing for Cappie was predictable but amusing. I was disappointed, though, that Cappie overslept and nearly missed his final. They've been trying so hard, to show growth for him this season, and sometimes I've even believed it, but the oversleeping thing sacrificed story for a dumb joke, or maybe was intended to reassure the viewers that graduation or no, he's always going to be Cappie. I don't know. I also think the full name gag was kind of disappointing after four years of making it be a thing. But these sort of things usually are.

I liked that they gave us a nod to Evan/Cappie/Casey, since that friendship/rivalry has always been one of the hearts of the show. And I like that Evan's still a bastard, but maybe he knows now when to turn it off. I like that they didn't give us Rebecca/Evan, but gave us closure there. I like that Dale got a girl. I wish that Calvin got a guy. I'm muddled about Rusty/Ashleigh. Honestly, I don't see that relationship having a huge longterm future, but I agree with Casey that Rusty and Ashleigh are strong enough to deal with the fallout if it fails.

And I liked that Rusty was uncertain if he could fill Cappie's shoes, and I like that Cappie was worried that his designated replacement couldn't handle it, and I like that what the show so often portrays as a fluky joke- 'karmic synergy'- is revealed in the end to be about hard work, determination, and daring on the part of people who so often doubt that they possess the capacity for those things. Kappa Tau exists because of Cappie, not in spite of him. And it will exist because of Rusty in the future.

And I like that the show breezed past the legalities of Parkes bulldozing the house as if they were nothing at all. That's the Animal House tradition, enemies of comical enthusiasm going after a frat house as if it were a hive of sleeper cell Nazis. Double secret probation, a little known codicil that lets the dean do whatever the plot demands of him. :P
