Feb. 28th, 2021 05:22 pmI default on PurimGifts this year, by putting it off to the last moment and then having the last moment hit with a work crisis. :( But I got amazing stories as gifts, and I want to point everyone to them.
They're all Gentlemen of the Road fics, Michael Chabon's delightful mashup of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser with medieval Jewish history. The stories imagine a visit by Amram and Zelikman to a Jerusalem that has Jews but is not Jewish, and the connections they forge with the Jews of Jerusalem as strangers coming home to a strange place. The depictions of food are gloriously rich, the character portraits are concise and brilliant, and they're warm and pointy and thoughtful and I love them.
