New laptop is named Ajax-greater, half of the fulfillment of a joke I've dreamed of since coming up with the Iliad naming schema. When I get my tablet, whichever kind I chose, I will name it Ajax-lesser. I may, quite possibly, be a terrible human being.

It's a System 76 Pangolin, which came with Ubuntu preinstalled and set up to work nicely. I immediately switched over to KDE, but that wasn't a major hardship. Wireless worked right out of the box, which was probably 20% of my motivation for buying an Ubuntu preinstall. I've never had that happen when buying a major brand and installing Ubuntu myself. Never. There's always a day or so of fiddly tweaking with modprobe commands. And part of me enjoyed that, because I got to pretend to be a 1337 hacker, which I am totally not, but mostly I hated it and am glad I didn't have to do it.

I synched my dropbox to it and borrowed a windows desktop to download my music collection from the Amazon cloud, since they don't support mass downloading to Linux. Yay for the cloud. I've lost some stuff, but nothing so far that I really miss.

And I have now therefore finally started assembling my vid for the tightpresent The Sarah Connor Chronicles vid challenge that I signed up for despite all sorts of reservations. I laid the song on the timeline, clipped the annoying outro, and started grabbing video clips. I need a lot of figuring out, still. I think there's really only about five or six images that I know where exactly they need to be in relationship to music and lyrics, and I have vague ideas about the rest. This is not quite the same as vidding in Fringe, where I know 60% of the footage cold.

Yay new laptop! (Sorry, I had dropped off the net when you lost it and am slowly catching myself back up again. Sorry you lost it, but happy you didn't lose much data, which would have been really awful.)

...We are terrible human beings too. My iPod is named Orlando, because D said it was very pretty and metrosexual like Legolas, and my iPad is named Paris... because it is larger than Orlando. This is embarrassing and I am not sure why I am admitting it in public :)

Heh. I also had a computer named Paris once, so named because it was networked to a computer named Helen.

At a certain point I ran out of my old computer naming schema, which was computers from Spider Robinson's Callahan Saga, and decided that I would never ever have that problem again if I named computers from the Iliad. Since then there has been Helen and Paris and Agamemnon and Thersites and Tiresias and now Ajax-greater.

That's a good scheme. I've been using Greek words for computery concepts for years, and I am running out. I've gone through pretty much every word for "thought", "wisdom" &c. I'm currently on "phos", "light "for my laptop, and "telos" for my phone.

Yes! Exactly how I feel about troubleshooting in Ubuntu. (I've had similar wireless problems with my ASUS netbook.)

Yay, new laptop!

I'm recognizing Fringe footage as it goes by now, from having watched New Day so many times. (Universe-to-universe transitions, mostly.)

This is my fifth TSCC vid that I'm clipping for, and I'm finally getting to a point that I'm starting to know which ep I need to go to for what. But I'm still getting into situations where I've decided that I made something up, that it isn't in any ep, and then finding it later by accident when I'm looking for a clip for something else... *shrug*

Having a whole lot of fun, though. There are parts of this show that I love so much. And now I get to go and pull the out and show them to other people. :-D

On the other hand, there's only ~30 episode of TSCC, vs. a hundred episodes of Fringe. That certainly makes it easier to get a handle on where things are in the source.
