I ordered the HP Touchpad because I couldn't beat the price, not because I had a need for it. Now I'm antsy waiting for it to show up.... HP's been so swamped by their firesale orders that they still haven't even completely processed my order, it looks like. I don't know when I'll really get it.
So I've been dreaming of things I might do with the Touchpad once I get it. I've been reading up on the thing to figure out what's possible. It sounds like WebOS is close enough to base Linux that a lot of the basic Linux software has already been ported to the hardware, and it's also possible to run a variety of distros in a chroot. I'm anticipating ssh, various text editors, all the usual little goodies. I'm hoping for Amarok, Okular/Calibre, and vlc.
Humza's suggested tablet-friendly games including Battle for Wesnoth. I'm not a gamer, but I'll give it a try. I've always found the idea of boardgaming using a tablet attractive- hopefully I can use it to play Scrabble and Chess with people. It's probably as close as I'll get to the Holochess scene from Star Wars. Though sadly Touchpad Chess is not Shabbasdik.
At the least, it ought to mean no more toting my laptop to rpg nights. After a few sessions of "Oh shit, I misplaced my current character sheet and can only find the one from a level down," I started bringing it so I'd always have the latest pdf of my character sheet, in addition to being able to reference the various rulebooks. A tablet ought to be a much easier way to do that, especially with a more powerful program for annotating pdfs.
Unfortunately, despite HP's pre-launch protests to the contrary, it appears that for the moment I have bought another computing machine that doesn't support Netflix Instant yet. Oh well, eventually Netflix is going to have to offer HTML5 support, right?
And if we're lucky, it will work with Google Hangouts, though I may need to forfeit my signature blue flame animation. That would be pretty exciting. If I could use the tablet for video chat I'd really feel like I was living in the future.
But mostly I'm excited because I have no idea what uses I may discover. When I bought my new laptop back in February I paid the extra fifteen bucks for the webcam feature thinking "Eh, maybe I''ll find a use for it." I literally used it once before Googleplus came out, to take a photo of my weird beard. Then googleplus came out and I find myself using the camera at least once a week. When you get a sufficiently interesting new technology there's no anticipating the discoveries you'll make with it. (Contrariwise, I also paid fifteen bucks extra for bluetooth, and haven't used that once. Can't get it to talk to my phone, and am not sure I'd want to.)
