Amazingly, the only episode of the back end of Season 2 of Fringe that I didn't quite love was the musical noir episode. I can't say Lee didn't warn me, but... they were on such a hot streak. White Lotus is my favorite episode of the show now, but all of the episodes from about 2e14 to 2e23 are just mindblowing.

How do you screw up a musical noir episode? Not enough musical, not enough noir. I mean, really, the noir episode is a simple formula. Snappy dialogue, predictable plot twists involving romantic betrayals and lies, old fashioned costumes, and if you throw in a couple plot motivated musical numbers it's a bonus. Fringe's noir episode started promising, but had Dunham ditch the fedora and overcoat for a white t-shirt for a ten minute scene in the middle that could have been out of any episode of Fringe. And the music never really worked, except for the corpse scene. And it seemed like they weren't sure if they wanted a dirty Chandlerian noir or a more Pushing Daisies vibe. Maybe it's nothing more than the fact that the show went with its own legitimate AU only four episodes later that really messed it up, though. I've seen how beautiful a job they've done at making red!Fringe feel alien and fascinating and it makes Brown Betty even more of a disappointment.

I'm now 5 episodes into Season 3 and it's amazing and... okay, it's a J.J. Abrams show based on the X-Files, and yet they clearly know what they're doing and where they're going with the overall plot. Which is so bizarre. I don't trust it, really, I keep expecting them to lose track of where they're going and muddle everything that's working, and yet it keeps going.

1000 words written in my [community profile] in_the_beginning story, which is a Bible story I'd been stalled on for months. Where by stalled I mean I wrote the first paragraph and didn't know where to go from there. Thankfully I'm past the stall.
