Life Restarting
Jan. 31st, 2022 03:05 pmIt was weird, the week after Hunt (long post on Hunt still in process) my sleep cycle was massively disregulated and I was out of sorts and in a bit of a daze, but I took a nice quiet weekend to reset and now I have energy and time I didn't have for most of last year. Last Monday it really hit me, I had an evening ahead of me with no plans and... no voice in my head telling me "You should be editing Hunt videos, or testsolving something, or writing a puzzle." If I wanted to, I could just waste time without guilt. What a tremendous luxury. That said, I want to do stuff with my free time again. I've been neglecting parts of my life.
My goal is to slowly work back into a more normal rhythm, and pick up some of the things I dropped. That's starting with just cleaning up my apartment. I literally had given up four square feet of floor space in my living room for the last six months to a couple of solved jigsaw puzzles that I might have used in a Hunt puzzle. I never figured out how to make the puzzle work, but I didn't want to disassemble them in case I figured out a way to make it happen. And in the meantime anytime I needed to access my television I had to hop over them. The pieces are finally back in their boxes, and that's just one of several examples of finally being able to retake my own living space back from Hunt's creeping maw.
I want to get back to reading more, and to reading heavier books I've been deferring. This year I will finish Piranesi and the Tyrant Baru Cormorant, and maybe catch up on Ken Liu's Dandelion Dynasty. I know I've been saying it for a decade, but maybe this year I will finish 2666. I also would like to get back to Daf Yomi or some other form of structured textual learning. I reached out to
freeradical42 about doing a chavrusa.
My D&D group kicks off again Thursday after a several month hiatus. I hated giving up DMing my campaign for Hunt, but in the meantime I've enjoyed being a player again and I'm happy to see my friend's campaign through for a while longer. Honestly I don't remember what my characters is, though. I should figure that out before Thursday. Maybe I was playing a sorcerer?
As weather warms up I want to get into a routine of biking again, and while I wait I want to force myself to use my stationary bike more often. I did a mile walk last Sunday evening to burn off some excess energy and I didn't like how out of breath I was at the end.
And I sat in on a Balticon program meeting on Sunday. The division head is the same person I worked with for DisCon, and I mostly enjoyed that work, so maybe I'll keep that up as long as it doesn't get too stressful. I also have personal fandom projects to get back to, largely vidding goals. By some miracle I hacked together a festivid. I need to get back in the rhythm.
I'm not giving up on puzzle stuff, either, just taking a break from running it. I'm signed up for the Boswords online winter crossword tournament in a couple weeks, and I'm finally getting to the January Panda magazine with a few local friends.
And lastly, I am trying to make a list of the friends I have not spent enough time with lately, and trying to reach out to them. Possibly a lot of them read this! If you think "Hey, I would like to spend more time hanging out with Ferret," online (or maybe in person?) and I haven't checked in with you, please poke me!
So I figure to be busy this year, that's not a worry, but there's a huge difference between being busy with lots of things to do, and being busy on one single project. It's nice to be back on the former.
