Philcon will be this coming weekend as a virtual convention. I'm not really sure how great that will be. Philcon is a frequently annoying experience that I love anyway because it's my local con, so I've been able to attend every year, hang out with friends, and navigate its missing stairs. Doing it online will be missing the major selling point of the con, its localness. It'll also be missing a second major selling point, which is the Jewish community that observes fannish Shabbos together.

That notwithstanding, I'm looking forward to chatting to the people I look forward to seeing at Philcon, and I will be running a D&D game and being on one panel. The panel is one I have been suggesting for several years, because I have been frustrated with how people talk about fanfic at Philcon and this is a conversation I think people need to have.

Game: The Wall of Doors (RPG, D&D 5th Edition Adventure)

On the rarely frequented southern edge of the walled city of Telomar, there is an enchanted wall. Embedded in its vast stone structure are hundreds of doors of all shapes and sizes leading to places unknown. It is a rite of passage for young Telomarians to gather together a group of friends, arm up, and tumble through one of the doors that nobody has yet explored. When they return- if they return- they are treated as adults, and given their clan tattoos.

This is a D&D 5th Edition adventure for up to five 3rd level characters, runtime ~ 3 hours. Pregenerated character sheets will be provided, or players can bring their own 3rd level character. Newbies and experienced players welcome.

Crossing the Streams

The old policy of fan artists and writers carefully avoiding any contact with The Powers That Be is becoming untenable in the age of Social Media, where actors routinely retweet fanfic and fanart of their characters and more and more professional writers are going public about their history as fanfic writers. But some boundaries are still useful to maintain. How can fans and professionals coexist in this new status quo?

I just couldn't get myself together to sign up for panels or anything. Probably won't even log on.

Sorry it can't provide more of the things, but also good that it's more possible to join in only for a few panels. At the weekend I went to an online con run by some of the UK people, and they were figuring out what works as an online event.

The DnD sounds like a good premise for a one-shot, basically "any short adventure" but with a good hook to get people to join in, and resilient to weird character builds. Did you invent it or is it published?

I would dearly love to play in one of your games. If you ever need another player, I'm there (given timing coordination). Happy to play any race, any class, what the party needs.
