Jun. 22nd, 2018 04:27 pmGreys Anatomy Fanfic I would Like to Read, A List:
- The One Where Zola Grey-Shepherd is in her late '20s (I haven't decided if I'd prefer if she's a new surgical intern or if she's doing something wildly different to rebel against her mother) and Meredith Grey starts showing symptoms of early on-set Alzheimer's, and it's a LOT for Zola to deal with. Medicine has advanced and there are more options for her than there were when Meredith was dealing with Ellis's Alzheimer's, but it's still an incredibly difficult disease and it's incredibly painful for Zola to watch her mother start to lose her mind. Especially since Zola is the only one in the family who does not have the genetic predisposition. But unlike Meredith, Zola has help. Siblings and aunts and a whole hospital of adoptive family who all in their clumsy way try to help. Also, many crossword puzzles get solved.
-The One where Cristina Yang teaches Sam Bello how to be a doctor in Switzerland. This can be femslash but I don't need it to be, it should mostly be incredibly technically detailed
-The One where Izzie is living the life Alex dreamed for her in 14x07, and it's more complicated than in Alex's dream but she's still pretty happy and the kitchen smells like muffins
-The one where Erica Hahn and Cristina Yang have angry conference sex and afterward begrudgingly admit that they both learned a lot from the other, but neither will admit they owe the other an apology.
-A lot of medical conference fic in general, of the sort where current Grey-Sloan people run into people who have left, but where both are at the conference With An Agenda and those agendae come into conflict
-The One where Alex didn't beat Deluca into a pulp, for fuck's sake Alex, what were you thinking?!!
-The One where Maggie tries to babysit all of Meredith's kids for the first time and chaos ensues
-The One where Cristina is back in town visiting and she has to try to babysit all of Meredith's kids, and they all join a creepy cult of Aunt Cristina worship, and it freaks Meredith out
-The One where Nobody Dies
-The One where Cristina gets into a relationship with someone awesome who actually means it when they say they don't want kids, and it's happy, and the conflict in this story is about something minor like sometimes Cristina forgets to get groceries when she says she will
-The One where Cristina decides she does want kids after all and has some
-The One where we meet Cristina's step-father, Saul Rubenstein, and Jewish things happen. Rubenstein/Yang family holiday traditions turn out to be completely absurd, but thoroughly researched, out a general sense that given their blended nature there is no actual family minhag to be recovered, so we might as well learn about other families' minhag. "This year for Yom Kippur we are going to reenact a ritual recovered from a burial site dating to 10th Century Khazaria. Wanna make something of it?"
-The One where somehow Addison moves in with Meredith and Maggie instead of Amelia, and things are terrible and awkward and hilarious, but "It's what Derek would have wanted" and after the stubbornest game of threeway chicken ever, all three of them are eventually forced to admit it was a terrible idea and Addison drives off into the sunset again and Zola and Bailey are only mildly traumatized by the experience, which is pretty good for the Grey family
-The One where Miranda Bailey and Tuck camp out to see The Force Awakens. And it's very much Tuck humoring Miranda. Tuck can take or leave Star Wars, but a new Star Wars movie is the biggest thing in Bailey's world. Also, Webber tries to hustle Bailey for her ticket after she's sat in line all night.
-Also The One where then Solo comes out and Miranda wants to make Tuck camp out again and he is having none of it.
-The One where Alex is teaching new peds interns who aren't Jo and he's fucking it up a bunch because he's Alex, and has to lean on Arizona to learn how she managed to teach him. And she explains all the tricks and manipulations she did to him without him realizing it. And he's kind of horrified to realize all the shit she pulled, and she's a little horrified, too, except then he pulls it all on the new kids and it works, so they both kind of shrug and roll with it. And Arizona's like "Maybe I should write a book. How to Turn Alex Karev Into a Human Being: A Manual"
Grey's Anatomy fanvids I am thinking of making, A List:
-General ensemble vid to Barenaked Ladies "Odds Are", about how all the wildly improbable things in that song have happened on the show. Crashed in an airplane? Check. Struck by lightning? Check. Odds are if you're a doctor at Grey's Sloan, everything is not gonna be all right.
-Meredith/Amelia/Maggie vid to "Make it Gold" by CHVRCHES. All the sisters feels.
-Creepy character study to "Green Gloves" by the National. Probably Meredith, though a Bailey vid would be able to center her OCD, while it wouldn't match some of the rest of the lyrics as well. Cristina could probably also work.
-Maggie-centric sisters vid to Fiona Apple's "Extraoardinary Machine".

Date: 2018-06-24 11:33 am (UTC)@ b) I don't get that worked up about message myself - if you have a stong message, that's great, but sometimes it's just about the squee. Once a vid goes out you have no control over how it's read anyway, as people bring their own stuff that heavily influences their reading. Many song writers go purpusefully for metaphores and ambigious lyrics to allow people to interact with a song rather than to just consume. I find Odds Are is also somewhat ambigious as the lyrics by them self reads to me like "really bad stuff doesn't happen that often, just get on with your life, focuse on all the postitives, fall in love" and the up-beat melody goes in the same direction. If you watch the song video it seems to turn the message on it's head, as the world is literally ending and everybody is in full denial mode, so it takes on a much darker, critical note. So you could take it into any direction I think, and it would work.
In the end it all comes down to how you feel about GA and the issue, is GA the fandome of your heart, a guilty pleassure or that annoying soap your significant other always wants to watch? Do you think optimism is the thing that keeps people going and that generally the good outways the bad or do you think optimism is mostly an avoidance strategy that helps people not to engage with issues?
If you're on the fence, you could go for a flip halfway through, though that's harder to pull off (I'm sthinking of Nicky's Smallville vid Jelously, for example or On the Prowl)but would pack more of a punch. Start of with Yay optimism and then get progressively darker until it's WTF, stupid optimism is killing us. Great thing is, whatevery you're going for, you're saying it with a wink, courtesy of BNL's bouncy style.

Date: 2018-06-25 01:31 pm (UTC)I have complicated thoughts about source vs. lyrics vs. message that are actually another post I'm in the process of writing. Personally, I think sometimes it's just about the squee. IS a message, and an important one. It's what fandom is about, of course it's fine to not be trying to make some erudite meta point. It's still a message and it still needs to be designed.
AndI think there are often significant interactions between song choice and message that have to be thought about. I have strong feelings about the trope of enemies-to-lovers fans vidding Jonathan Coulton's "Skullcrusher Island," for example. They are clearly trying to hit the lyrics that are compatible with the trope and have the viewer ignore the lyrics that are over the top creepy and critical of the trope, but it usually fails for me because the lyrics are so clear and narrative that there's no good way to minimize those lyrics.
I'd never watched the official music video for "Odds Are", though! Thanks for showing that to me, you're absolutely right that it opens up a lot more directions to take the vid. Still, most viewers are probably not going to take the music video's themes into account because they probably won't have seen it.
As to what I want to do with it based on my feelings about the show, I'm not sure. Grey's Anatomy skates a fine line for me with its genre-savvy. There's a throughline in S9, after the plane crash, when some of the new characters are terrified of working at Seattle Grace because it's cursed, and it's similar to my complaint about the Kepner/God storylines... We know that the reason why characters die so often in random and dramatic ways on Grey's is because it's a soapy television show and that's the fuel that drives the show. We know that's why three surgeons got brain tumors, not because of any relation to how often brain tumors happen in the real world, or 'bad luck', but because brain tumors make for good drama. It's hard for me to ignore the mechanics of sweeps weeks and midseason finales and characters being written off for saying homophobic slurs when watching Grey's, especially when the show's own characters are stuck coming up with Watsonian explanations for it, and I think that's what attracts me to the project of a vid that calls attention to the improbably bad luck of the characters on Grey's.
So I think a question of optimism isn't really the point. The point is to call attention to the unnaturalism, and the ways in which the characters grapple with being unaware that they are characters in a soap opera. Optimism, pessimism, banding together, fighting each other.
Maybe the arc, then, is to start with the fakeouts and later bring in the real whomp. The first Crashed on an Airplane gets the Meredith and Riggs survive on an airplane episode, the second gets the Lexie and Mark dying. The first Struck by Lightning gets Webber surviving his electrocution, the second gets Brooks dying of electrocution... or actually, probably the other way around is better. Everything is terrible and doomed on Grey's, unless you're one of the handful of safe characters, in which case the Odds Are you'll probably be all right, just horribly traumatized by all the doom around you.

Date: 2018-06-25 06:14 pm (UTC)You've got you concept right there. If you want to go full meta you could even use outside source, e.g. headlines of actors leaving show etc, or is this too on the nose? Totally agree with the sense of cynicism regarding sweeps and finals, and killing off people in majorly dramatic ways to accommodate real life circumstances.
The way I deal with multi-fandom vids is by watching them, not making them ;). I mostly vid limited source media, e.g. movies, one-season/short seaons TV shows or even just one episode of a show. Because clipping/archiving/tagging is a bitch and I just can't. /o\ So I am totally not trying to talk you into something that would eat your life and sanity! Just to cheerlead if this is something you wanna do. I'd even do pompoms and spelling cheers!

Date: 2018-06-25 08:37 pm (UTC)Hah, fair enough. After I made my >100 source vid, I said I was never gonna do it again... and then my CVV for this year has >50 sources, though almost all of them are just youtube downloads. I guess it's a little easier once you've had some practice and know what works and what doesn't, but it's still a pain.
