Merchant: I regularly get calls from people, reporters, etc. asking me to comment on one campaign or another to shut down a production of the play. I tend to disappoint them though because I think the play should be produced. In fact, the last time I taught the play was at a Jewish Day school. my logic being "this is the safest place for these students to encounter this play that they'll ever be in." Got one challenge from a parent, talked with them and resolved it and the students learned the play. Including an Israeli who needed the play in Hebrew. (I kept a photocopy of that translation for the files.)
I've probably seen Merchant a dozen times at this point. As you said, some of the productions are bad, some are middling, and once upon a time I saw one that was utterly brilliant.
