So, I will be going to some Cons.


I have a ticket for New York Comic Con on the Sunday, October 13th. It'll be my second NYCC, after 2011, and my expectations are not all that high. NYCC is one of those giant floor shows at the Javits Center where you wander around for hours amidst giant crowds getting little tiny tastes of things. I never really like those, even though I've been going to the Auto Show for years. So basically my hope is that I'll have a couple of interesting interactions.

I'll be going to Philcon for the full weekend, November 8-10th, and for that my expectations are higher. It's my home SF con and this'll be my third or fourth straight year going depending on whether you count a cameo four years ago where I showed up, blundered into a game of Dread, and then went home. Philcon is awesome. I'm looking forward to a place where in one weekend I'll be able to play board games and rpgs, sing filk, buy, read, and talk about SF fiction, argue about comic books, and dream about the future. Also, maybe this will be the year when the hotel doesn't put me higher than the tenth floor on Shabbat.

And in most exciting news of all, I bought a membership to the 2014 Worldcon in London. I have never been to London. I have never been to Europe. The whole thing is very, very exciting to me. Tell me what I should do when I'm in London besides be a giant nerd? Also, I anticipate the whole thing being quite expensive, so if you know other people who are going and who might to share a hotel room let me know.

Re: London - you should absolutely go to Dennis Sever's House which is a sort of museum/weird art place/thing. It's absolutely fascinating.

I am going to NYCC too! I find that as long as you avoid the showroom floor the con is much more bearable and fun. Although my favorite part is when you walk towards the Javits center and as you get closer the numbers of cosplayers multiplies exponentially.

And I can tell you what not to do in London on the same day: don't take a walking tour of London and then do standing room only at the Globe. I mean, I would recommend both of those things, they were both great, but don't do them on the same day.

Yeah, that's probably true about avoiding the showroom floor. In 2011 there weren't really that many Sunday panels that I was interested in- we walked into one panel on costuming and ran out five minutes later when it became clear how obnoxious it was going to be. The highlight of the con for me was a D&D Encounters demo at the Wizards booth, which was really the closest the con ever came for me to feeling like a smaller con- for forty-five minutes I could just tune out the chaos and interact with four or five interesting people.

I'd definitely be cool with meeting up. I'll only be there Saturday & Sunday (stupid work!) and will probably be hanging out with my friend C. and my roommate fox1013, though there are a few other people we might end up meeting up with as well. I'll have my phone and I can check e-mails on that or if that doesn't work, e-mail me and I'll give you other co can e-mail me for other contact info if e-mail doesn't work for you. I believe we'll probably be hanging out mostly at panels or in the Artist's Alley (even though the LAST thing I need is more stuff to hang on my walls -- we are running out of room!).

The War Rooms, in London, were the coolest thing and, for me anyway, totally worth visiting. The Queen's Mews, which contain her carriages and some horses were also surprisingly interesting, if you wait for a tour to tell you all the details about everything. I learned about the national animals of Australia!
