I was... surprised by the introduction of Ahab. For some reason I had this idea of him in my head as a crotchety old man, and I was surprised that not only is he in his prime of life, Ishmael finds him admirable (from purely a physical perspective).
Also, as I'm getting farther into the book, I'm starting to see that The Wrath of Khan really is Moby-Dick SPAAAAACE!AU fanfic, which is fantastic and which I really only had the barest inkling of when I watched the movie.
