Jun. 10th, 2013 09:27 amI'm fairly certain I haven't mentioned it, but I've been religiously watching Penny Arcade's webcomic reality show "Strip Search" from the first episode. It's been pretty great.
I'm not a fan of the kind of reality show where everyone is boorish and mean to each other, but I've been known to get hooked on the kind of reality show where everyone's a good person and they're all competing against each other to be the best but they all clearly are rooting for each other also. "Who Wants to Be a Superhero" was probably my first reality show obsession, because it was structurally designed to make sure that everyone, even if they really were boorish and venial and publicity-obsessed, pretended they weren't. "Strip Search" is kind of hilarious because clearly Gabe and Tycho were at least somewhat hoping for alliances and backstabbing and that kind of entertaining reality fare, but instead they got a dozen awesome cartoonists who love each other, love the experience of learning from each other, and love testing themselves against each other.
I'm pretty sure I'm on Team Maki. I have the Pineapple Maki shirt and everything. But there are so many other awesome artists on the show and it's been great watching them compete. The best part of the show is the eliminations, where two of the competitors have 90 minutes to draw a comic strip while Gabe and Tycho heckle them.
The finale is coming up this and next Friday, so now's your chance to catch up before the winner is declared.
