Jul. 10th, 2012 03:57 pmCracked out crossover I wish I had the chops to write of the moment:
Harry Potter fic as Midnight's Children pastiche... title of the fic would obviously be "Parvati-the-Witch". It would be Parvati Patil POV with interjections from her dung-goddess/twin sister Padma. And it would do all the hybrid culture intersectionality stuff Rowling fails to- Parvati as English but also Indian, at the same time that she's a pureblood witch, and at the same time she's a woman in a patriarchal world. And at the same time it would explode the magical realism of Rushdie as absurdly pretentious- sometimes magic just happens because people make it happen, and there is no grand plan behind it. Some people are ruled all their lives by prophecies. Some people are Saleem Sinais or Harry Potters. And some people are Parvati-the-Witch, in either incarnation.
Sometimes I really wish I could write.

Date: 2012-07-18 08:03 pm (UTC)You're probably already aware of these novels and Ben Aaronovitch isn't a poc but he does write a diversity of characters and his Rivers of London series (known as Midnight Riot in the US?) is related to what you asked for in terms of content:
