My Weirdest COVID Coping Mechanism has been William Guy Carr's Pawns in the Game as bedtime reading. It's a famously anti-semitic tract from the 1950s, about how the evil Jews in partnership with Lucifer and the Illuminati have been conspiring for centuries to rule the world.

I was talking to [personal profile] allandaros the other day about this and in the face of his obvious skepticism I said "Look, I'm not saying it's a HEALTHY thing to do."

I picked it up a few years ago out of morbid curiosity but I couldn't get very far. I still can't get very far. I pick it up, read a page or two, then throw it back on the floor beside my bed. Maybe there's comfort in reading someone else's very orderly explanation of events that can be hard to make sense of. Maybe there's comfort in knowing that the people who are out to get me are ridiculous, illogical people. Maybe everything in the real world is so terrible that it's comforting to know that there is an even worse vision of the world out there.

What's your weirdest coping mechanism right now?

So many hours of Apollo in Real Time. So, so many hours. Not even the air-to-ground communications or the flight director's loop, but backroom communications by flight controllers. It's like twenty-eight minutes of people reading the telephone book followed by two minutes of banter. It is making me very happy.

I'm obsessively making chicken stock. One of our go-to takeout places has amazing rotisserie chicken, and every time we finish one, the bones go in the freezer. I'm making a pot of stock every week. I just decanted nearly six cups of liquid gold that were simmering for ten hours. The house smells amazing.

The antiracist band Das Racist, to entertain themselves on long van rides while touring, would listen to racist conspiracy theory radio broadcasts. You are not alone.

My weirdest coping strategy was restarting the Daily Quiz. But it has brought me a lot of joy.
