Summary:
My Jews dancing multifandom vid "Warning: Might Lead to Mixed Dancing" took 7 months of work and consumed my brain for that whole time. All media I watched was viewed with the ruling question being "Do Jews dance in it?" Talking about that experience afterward,
thingswithwings told me "Eventually you will find that you like things again even when they don't have Jews dancing, I promise."
This was sort of true. I did like things that didn't have Jews dancing in them again. But two years later, the instincts of hunting for Jews dancing in media have not fully turned off. Partially that's because there's a reason I made the vid in the first place. The odds are pretty good that if a piece of media has Jews dancing in it, I will enjoy it, because Jews dancing correlates with other types of storytelling about Jews that I like, and because I like watching Jews dance. But also the kind of person who obsessively hunts through obscure media for Jews dancing is an obsessive person.
After I finished the first vid, I started running a new list of shows and movies I'd watched where Jews dance, that I had not included in "Warning: Might Lead to Mixed Dancing." Two years in, I had a list of about 35 fandoms where Jews dance, where I had notes of exactly where they danced. Last summer, I was watching "The Good Fight" eagerly waiting to see if Marissa Gold would dance, and she finally did in Season 2, and it opened the floodgates and I committed to making a new vid, a sequel to "Warning: Might Lead to Mixed Dancing".
This vid's identity is a lot less settled than the first one. As a sequel, how much is it about commenting on its relationship to its predecessor, and how much does it have something of its own to say? I struggled with that a lot, hoping that new ideas would come, but they never exactly came. The fandoms involved here tend to be more obscure than the first time around, because I used the most obvious ones the first time around. So I had more stubborn source material to work with. But I think in some ways that works to my advantage. If Warning: Might Lead to Mixed Dancing was about the diversity of Jewish identity and the common ground of dancing, I feel like using more obscure and diverse material tells that story even better. There are so many Jews and types of Jews you had no idea existed!
I'm grateful to the many people who helped on this vid, by suggesting fandoms, by providing source, by helping with brainstorming, by giving comments on drafts, by being enthusiastic about the idea. This was a less lonely process than the first vid was, and it was a faster and more fun process as a result. My initial list of 35 fandoms rapidly became a much longer list, and the final vid has more than a 110 fandoms in it.

Date: 2020-04-06 05:37 pm (UTC)Yeah, it's Leonard Nimoy playing Golda Meir's husband in A Woman Called Golda. And it's Miriam Shor as Yitzhak from Hedwig. I was delighted to find Kirk Douglas, that was one of the last clips I added to the vid and I loved how similar it was to the shot of Michael Douglas dancing in Wonder Boys.
