There are credits over the hot air balloon sequence in last night's The Good Place and it makes me angrier than I've been in a long time. They must hate vidders.
Uuuugh, I hate that sooooo much. That's the worst thing about sitcoms having been forced to cut so short--all the credits are now over scenes that are useful, and especially endings have some kind of valuable image.
See, in the AMV world, we can usually count on creditless opening/ending sequences being released as DVD extras (though I really had to go digging for the APH ED for that marching scene in "And Now, a Word From Our Sponsors"). I have no idea how common that is for live-action shows/movies...?
I'm not really talking about opening/ending sequences with credits that appear with every episode... Those might end up in creditless form as a DVD extra, although in this age of streaming it's increasingly hard to find well-assembled DVDs with extras at all. But a lot of shows are putting actual episode content with end credits over it because they're trying to squeeze more show into an extremely tightly limited timeslot. And you're almost never going to find a creditless version of those things on DVD, the only exception is when that final scene has an alternate or extended version included as an extra. So your only options are to crop around or mask the credits out... sometimes that's workable.
I have been caught out by this so often. I have a perfect clip for my vid in my mind, and when I check it out it's a 'cold open' with credits on them. Argh. Sometime you can use localized extreme bluring or zooming to disguise or get rid of it, but neither are great options. This is one thing I love the streaming services for, pretty much all of their shows have good, old-fashioned title sequences so you don't get stray text on your clips.
