Dec. 21st, 2018 01:22 pmThe Metropolitan Opera collaborated with local classical station WQXR and with Carolina Chocolate Drops leader Rhiannon Giddens on a new podcast, which has so far released three episodes. It's called Aria Code and as the name suggests the idea is to do a deep dive into one specific aria per episode.
They pair commentary from opera people, the singers and directors who figure out how to stage an aria, with commentary from 'experts'. What the expert might be depends on the aria. For Violetta's scena from the end of Act I of Traviata, they brought in a former call girl to discuss the emotional experience of differentiating between professional sex and personal love, and for Che Gelida Manina from La Boheme they brought in a neuroscientist to talk about the brain chemistry of love at first sight. It's been an interesting listen so far, and I think it is probably a good entrypoint into opera for people who don't know much about it but are curious to learn.
