May. 20th, 2019 12:23 pmI woke up yesterday to rain and wind at 6AM and worried that the prophesied good weather had decided not to show up. But by 9AM it was drying up and by the time I hit the road at 10am the sun was shining brightly. I think it ended up in the 80s in the afternoon, and it was lovely when I was biking.
The trail is starting to hit its busy season- I was glad I invested a few months ago in a bell for my bike, it made passing pedestrians so much less nerve-wracking. I saw ducks and bluejays and robins and other birds that I have exhausted the limit of my ability to identify birds. I saw turtles and frogs and a groundhog, too. And everywhere a bright green, dotted with purple wildflowers. I biked 12 miles out to Manville, then 12 miles back. I was trying to take it easy and not push myself too hard, and yet Strava tells me I set a bunch of personal time records on the trail, anyway. I seem to be getting better and more comfortable on the bike. And I woke up this morning not sore at all, but well rested and cheerful.
My big goal for the summer is to see if I can bike to Staten Island. The new Goethals Bridge supposedly has a bike lane? Of course the Outerbridge, which is closer to me, remains bike inaccessible. But it'd be cool to cross the Goethals.
In the afternoon, we worked on Panda Magazine's May set. It was fun, though we did not get as far as I thought we would. People filtered in and out all afternoon for various reasons, so even though we threw five puzzlers at the puzzles, most of the time it was just me and one other person. And of my team, I seem to be the only one capable of extracting an answer. So we solved four of the twelve puzzles. Maybe I'll be able to squeeze in some time last this week to try to finish the rest of them.
