Variation 3
Fandom: Merchant of Venice/ Pirate Rabbi RPF
Characters: Samuel Palache, Malca Palache, Jessica
Summary: You had to know it was inevitable that I would write this story.
When I wrote Aria, Variation 1, and Variation 2 for
darthjamtarts for Purimgifts a couple years ago, I named the series The Jessica Goldberg Variations. It was really an in-joke with myself more than anything. Jessica Goldberg is an extremely traditional 20th century American Jewish name, whereas Jessica was not a particularly traditional 16th Century Italian Jewish name and the Goldberg of the Goldberg Variations was also not Jewish. The joke was in taking two non-Jewish things and by smashing them together creating something Jewish. Which in a way I was also doing as a Jewish author reinterpreting Shakespeare. But by patterning myself after the famous Bach variations, I set myself a goal larger than Purimgifts allowed me to fulfill. That is, the set will be complete when I have written 32 versions of Jessica. Yikes.
I'm pleased to finally pick up the task again. Here's my first overt crossover variation, though I expect there will be more to come. It combines two things I am deeply, passionately fannish about- the Pirate Rabbi and the Merchant of Venice.
Today is the twenty fourth day of the Omer
