So what I think happened is that Hallmark Christmas movies very much know their audience, and that audience does not give a shit about Chanukah. But they were feeling media pressure to diversify so they tried to make movies that would appeal to their existing audience while having a tenuous connection to Chanukah. But then they discovered that there are so few Chanukah movies that if they actually put in a little effort to get things right, they'd get a whole new audience, people like me who will watch any movie as long as Jews dance. They've been gradually year by year adding more and more Jewish flavor to the movies while still trying desperately to avoid offending their core audience. Last year's movie actually wasn't too terrible, either, honestly, I just didn't love the DNA test part of it.
