Inspired by conversation with [personal profile] schemingreader and discussions of Physicist RPF and of course, by Fearful Symmetry, my Back to the Future AU story from last year's Yuletide.

Title: Only a Sun Can Lead a Copernican Revolution (part 1)
Fandom: Back to the Future/ Manhattan Project RPF
Warnings: None
Characters: Leo Szilard, AU!Doc Brown

It's late and Leo Szilard is smoking a cigarette instead of dinner, standing outside a lab that is little more than a barn, atop a dune that is intemperately warm for a November night. The wind kicks through the hills, so Leo sticks close to the lab, using his free hand to shield his cigarette from its gusts.

"Room for another?" The voice is familiar, and Leo bobs his head with subtle greetings as young Emmett Brown steps outside the lab building and quickly lights up his own cigarette. His wild hair rocks in the wind.

"The computers are entering the fifth iteration. They should be finished in fifteen minutes."

"I know, Emmett. That's why I'm out here waiting."

"It's going to work. You know that already, don't you?"

Leo is silent. Emmett's hair rustles in the wind.

"Dr. Oppenheimer says that once this optimization is achieved, we can get the welders and machinists started on the final proto..."

"I don't give a fuck what Bobby says."

Emmett jumps a step back. His cigarette goes out and he rushes to relight it. "I didn't mean anything, Dr. Szilard. I... I have my doubts about this, too. Klaus told me about the letter."

"Put the letter out of your mind, Emmett. That letter is trouble above your paygrade. Do your job, solve the problems they tell you to solve, and don't let the Army get up in your face."

"But Dr. Szilard... You wrote the letter!"

Leo hangs his cigarette in the air for a moment, letting the wind extinguish it. Then he drops it to the ground, stomps on it with his heel, and turns to Emmett with a fiendish smile.

"What do the Americans say? 'Do as I say, not as I do?' There's a war going on, boy, and the Nazis are even more evil than they say on the newsreel. You don't want to know the things I've seen. But the Americans... don't assume that they're any better. It's a fucked up world we live in, Emmett."

He stops for a moment, like a hunter sniffing the air for some animal scent.

"The computers are done. We'd better see what they've got for us to analyze."
