Feb. 7th, 2021 10:03 amI made a lot of festivids this year! All over the map in tone and style, but I think a lot of them in one way or another bear the hallmarks of my vidding. You have the instrumental vid, the nonsense joke vidlet, the vid adding another language to my growing list of vidsong languages, the vid with the dancing...

Summary:
My assignment for festivids was for
gwenfrankenstien, and we matched primarily on the Bruno and Boots movies. I had in fact only seen the first one, but I read all the books as a kid many, many times, and it was not a hardship to catch up on the movies and plot out a vid. Or two.
gwenfrankenstien asked for a Bruno/Boots or Cathy/Diane shipvid, but what I wanted to make first was a general ensemble vid, and then I went back when that was completed surprisingly quickly and made a Cathy/Diane vid.
It was interesting to go back and make the second vid, I used a lot of the same source but in different ways- changing clip speeds and cutting speed, cropping or using vignette effects to shift focus, changing contextualizations. I laughed reading Discord discussion of watching first "Jenny" and then "We Are Golden"... someone commented as soon as "We Are Golden" started, "There are boys in these movies?" Oh, right, the song choice ought to have been another tell, as it's the second time I used a Mountain Goats cover from the I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats All Hail West Texas cover album.

Then I grabbed
skygiants's pinch hit, and spent some time thinking about the grownups in the original Jumanji movie. Robin Williams is such an amazing actor, his most comic moments carry so much heart and humanity. I liked
skygiants's framing that the tragedy of Jumanji is that Alan and Sarah are trapped in the worst day of their life for decades, and I tried to show the strength of character required to survive that and the absurd wonder of getting a second chance. Oh, another tell, my second vid to Josh Ritter in the last six months, and fourth overall.
Then I got into treats.

Summary:
I didn't want to commit to another pinch hit but when I saw
starlady out on pinch hit I decided to see what I could do as a treat. The new Charlie's Angels movie has an extended sequence in Istanbul so I thought it would be goofily on the nose to vid it to the Turkish 'cover' of the TMBG cover of the Four Lads song "Istanbul". The Turkish version, by punk band Rashit, isn't actually a cover- the lyrics are instead a rant about the corruption and desolation of the modern city of Istanbul, contrasted subtextually against the Western orientalist vision of the city as represented by the Four Lads song. (The loudest subtext, of course is the implicit "That's nobody's business but the Turks." I think primarily my vid is a celebration of the kinetic storytelling of the movie, but I wanted it to also, in the background, say something about the way spy movies use 'exotic' locations but don't accurately capture the essence of the cities they visit. Which I think is a fair criticism of Charlie's Angels, I saw in Discord people saying that they hadn't even remembered that the movie went to Istanbul... and it's about a full half hour of the movie that takes place there.

And then similarly
sandalwoodbox went out for pinch hit and I didn't claim it but set out to make another Carmen Sandiego vid treat, to their Jules/Carmen prompt. The Sarasate Carmen Fantasy is just about the most on-the-nose music choice I could pick- actually the second most on the nose, but the show itself actually already vidded itself to the '90s Rockapella theme as a bonus scene in the choose your own adventure episode. I wanted Carmen at her most graceful and elusive, slipping in and out of Jules's dreams as events of her chase evolved.

Summary:
Then once I finished that youtube's algorithm, in its infinite wisdom, decided to show me a bunch of "But If You Close Your Eyes" memes, where a country on a map is photoshopped out in a dissolve to the Bastille song "Pompeii". It's a weirdly deep and delightful meme that has been used for all sorts of interesting political purposes in terms of what making a country disappear means... and it was such a Carmen Sandiego thing, stealing a country, so I couldn't resist making a quickie vidlet. This was my least popular vid, I guess the meme isn't as well known as I'd hoped.
In all of this, I didn't manage any vids in which Jews dance. I came close, with a full draft of a Party Down vid, but I didn't feel like it was good enough to release. I may continue to work on it, or I may just reject it as a failed experiment. One of the hardest things about vidding is the sunk cost fallacy. It's hard to recognize that you put hours and hours of work into something that will never actually be an interesting vid.
