Vidrec Thursday
Nov. 20th, 2020 12:02 amThe first vid I recced in this series was
such_heights's amazing Season 4 The Good Place vid "Raising Hell". Today I'm reccing another vid that tells the story of Season 4 in a completely different way, still on my streak of reccing vids from
fanworks con.
"Raising Hell" focuses on the way Team Cockroach turns its focus outward in Season 4, trying to create an afterlife that is better for other people, not just for themselves.
trelkez's vid "The Breaking Light" turns inward and looks at the emotional journey of Team Cockroach and how they came to terms with that journey coming to an end. It is a devastatingly beautiful look straight at truths about life that we sometimes find easier to turn our eyes away from because they're too unknowable and thus scary.
The Breaking Light on AO3
The most amazing thing about this vid is that it can make you forget for minutes at a time that this is a show full of the dumbest jokes about shrimp fountains, and focuses with laser precision on the way this show is also so emotionally sensitive at portraying this utterly unique found family. The vid is so attuned to the smallest gestures of affection and caring.
I think it also reminds me of
trelkez's "Closing Time" multifandom vid, which ended the last Vividcon with a montage of series finales. This has a similar approach to the idea of endings being bittersweet times where you can both reflect on what came before and look forward anxiously to whatever may be beyond the next corner.
