By the way, it's looking like I'm going to be touring the Helsinki synagogue on the Thursday of WorldCon. I don't know if you want to skip out on con stuff for that, or if you'd rather go earlier in the week (before I show up in Helsinki), but I figured I'd mention in case you wanted to make a group outing of it.

It's the whole Chicago Pride thing, so I have lots of queer Jewish friends on Facebook debating it, and it's one hundred percent not my place to talk. But it's so frustrating to watch a debate literally about whether Jews can exist in public and have to restrain my rage.


I don't really have many Worldcon plans. I think I feel like this is going to be the kind of Worldcon where I don't have FOMO about panels, because I've been to plenty of Worldcons and so far the panelists look like the usual suspects. And Helsinki is such a neat city to explore. So yes, Thursday sounds good- when are you going and what do I need to do to sign up?

Ah, yeah. I've seen some discussion of that, none of which seems to created any really useful dialogue, unfortunately.

Tours are at 10 and 2; I was aiming for 10, on the theory that would be less disruptive of WorldConning than trying to go over in the middle of the day. The synagogue requests you submit a copy of your passport to them in advance--more information here: http://www.jchelsinki.fi/en/visit. I have not actually e-mailed them yet, since I'm still waiting for the friend I'm traveling with to get me a copy of her passport, heh.

Hey, was wondering if you'd emailed them yet. I emailed last Thursday ... got an away message saying they'd probably respond today, but I haven't heard anything back yet

I also got the message that they were closed until 7/31. I wasn't going to worry too much if I hadn't heard back from them until Wednesday or so; I imagine they have a lot of accumulated email to process

And I just heard back from them, and so did the two other people I invited along. So it looks like there will be at least five of us for 10 a.m. on Thursday (please feel free to invite others if you think of them!). The other couple are staying at the Sokos Hotel Torni, which is a couple blocks from the synagogue (I think? someone tell me if my understanding of Helsinki geography is wrong, heh), so I figured we'd meet in the hotel lobby around 9:30ish and head over from there? Does that work for you?

(I mean. What do I know? Queer but not Jewish and I haven't followed this thing closely. But it certainly seems like really clear-cut anti-Semitism from Chicago Pride.)

I mean, it's about Pride, it's very much not my place to get involved, and so I have been forcing myself to be restrained, but seeing literally dozens of facebook threads this week in which people are arguing about our right to exist in public is brutal.
