I think there are two answers to that- one seems to be that Crosby's book is one of the reasons it's not as forgotten as it once was, and the other is that even people who have heard about it don't realize just how incredibly devastating it was, that it was probably more deadly than World War I itself, though that's hard to quantify because it was so widespread and in many places medical records are inadequate.
