What does it mean to, as Stacker says, 'enter the drift with nothing'? Is Stacker just that badass, or is that something that can be taught?

I was fascinated by the implication in Year Zero that Stacker simply just has that superpower (He runs the robot hand all by himself and convinced the scientists that a single human can control a Jaeger, except that it turns out he's an anomaly)
