Apr. 29th, 2013 04:30 pmAttached, some photos of miniatures I've painted. I've posted some of them on G+ over the past few days with self-deprecating comments about how bad they are, and gotten reassurances that they're not that bad, which isn't really what I'm looking for when I make self-deprecating comments. I have plenty of ego. I'm not the type who trash-talks himself when he's done a good job. I toot my horn all the time.
When I make self-deprecating comments it's because I know I can do better at something, and am looking to figure out how to do better. Self-deprecating comments are my cue for people to say, "You're right, the shading is sloppy." Ideally, I'd like that to be followed with constructive suggestions, but even the confirmation of my mistakes is appreciated. Not that I don't like compliments, of course. If there are things you like, tell me! Just, I am not passive-aggressively soliciting compliments when I criticize myself.
In any case, I am getting better at this painting thing, having now painted about ten minis. I'm getting a better feel for mixing colors, a better feel for shading and highlighting, a better feel for contrasting different colors. I'm getting a little better touch on small details- I'm pleased with how the teeth came out on my latest orc. I kinda like my capes, even though I can see how they could be better.
I am not good at faces still, especially human faces, and especially eyes. I don't have good tactics in place for when I make a slip of the brush- it's immensely frustrating to have to wait for a whole coat to dry just to retouch a small dot of yellow in a gray blue area, especially if it was a mixed color I'm not sure I can reproduce accurately. But just painting over it while it's still wet doesn't work. And free hand painting of shapes and patterns still terrifies me, leaving me stuck with whatever is sculpted. I watch youtube videos of people adding tattoos to these tiny minis and it fills me with awe.
And I love doing mixing paints for orc skins, the iterations of slightly darker undercoats with lighter green highlights. For some reason I'm so much better at this than doing human skin colors, probably because nobody will call it unnatural if I get the orc skin color wrong.

Today is the thirty fourth day of the Omer
