Terri Lyne Carrington and The Bad Plus were two of the musicians I played when I did my panel on vidding to jazz music at Vividcon last year. I saw both of them last night at a concert at le Poisson Rouge.
It was a really meaty show with three bands each playing a full hour long set. Started at 7pm, the last band played its encore around 11:45.
Carrington has a new band called Social Science, which is awesome. Drums from Carrington, bass, guitar, sometimes saxophone, keyboard, samples, vocals by Debo Ray, rapping by Kassa Overall... A blend of jazz, soul, hip-hop, rock, pulsed with a righteous fury about the world we live in.
They were followed by trumpeter Terrence Blanchard's band E-Collective, which was also amazing. Their songs were mostly slow grooves full of minimalist elements building into something absolutely massive. I'm going to dig into Blanchard's discography hardcore now.
And last was the Bad Plus!!! I'm so glad I finally got to see them live; they've been one of my favorite bands for ages. They mostly played a mix of stuff from Never Stop and Never Stop II, with a song from Made Possible. Their playing is electric and they were having so much fun out there together and you couldn't help but move to the music.
